Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects
Handover ceremony for the project for Construction of Girls’ Hostels at Baula Community Day Secondary School in Mzimba District
31st July, 2014
On 31st July 2014, His Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka, Ambassador of Japan to Malawi, handed over newly constructed Girls’ Hostel’s at Baula Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Mzimba district with the aim of improving access to education among girls in Malawi.
Students of Baula CDSS walk an average distance of 30km to and from school on a daily basis. This affects their concentration in class and has led to high school dropout and absenteeism. In order to address this challenge, the Government of Japan awarded the Northern Education Division a grant amounting to $110,463 (equivalent to K43.743 348 million at present value) for the implementation of a project for Construction of Girls’ Hostels at Baula CDSS under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects. This grant has facilitated the construction of two girls’ hostels and the provision of mattresses to accommodate 112 girls.
This project will help to provide safe boarding facilities that will enable the girls have enough time to rest and concentrate in class, eventually being empowered intellectually to become reliable female leaders in the community. The occasion was graced by Honourable Olipa Muyaba, Member of Parliament for Mzimba North East.
